Kept this kid busy for ages!
Recommended Ages: 2-ish to 48 (well… my husband did one and he thought it was really cool).
Materials
Paper: watercolor paper, card stock, poster board
watercolor paint
white school glue
table salt
Directions
With the glue, make designs on the paper, sprinkle generous amounts of table salt on glue, pouring excess off, like so
Be generous when pouring on the salt
Make a funnel and gently pour off the excess
Drop tiny bits of watercolor pain on the salt and watch as it spreads through the salt.
Takes a while to dry, depending on how saturated the salt got… some of Margo’s salt shapes ended up in puddles… for those… there is no hope… But, I think overnight or a few hours in the sun would do.
Special Notes
Margo was so busy and absorbed with this activity for a long time! She kept asking me to make more and more designs that she could paint! You can tailor this activity for any age kid. For the little ones, you may want to help here and there, just to get them started, like make a design and show them once what to do. But, for slightly older kids, just let them have fun and do it themselves. Give them the materials and see if they can figure out what to do with them. With any activity, just let the kids have fun. Try not to interfere too much if they’re not ‘doing it right‘. Margo turned a few of her salty pictures into a brown slurry, but that was half the fun! She was asking me why the salt was melting, etc. Margo kept saying that the salt looked like ice (typical Aussie, always dreaming of the snow). Art even came home and did one himself, the kids loved watching daddy make one too 🙂
Daddy man’s art still drying (haha, his name IS Art after all). It’s an abstract of a porcupine… or a jellyfish.. we’re not quite sure…
